Error: "Post uninstall clean up exception occurred..."

The following error occurs when installing TurboTax 2008 or higher:

Post uninstall clean up exception occurred. Access to the path X is denied.

where X is replaced by one of these:

  • winperReleaseEngine.msi
  • winperFedFormset.msi
  • winperProgramHelp.msi
  • winperTaxSupport.msi
  • winperUserEducation.msi

Solution 1

Follow these steps to reinstall TurboTax:

  1. Uninstall TurboTax using Add/Remove Programs (in Vista, Programs and Features) on the Control Panel.

    Note: If uninstalling TurboTax fails, follow the steps in Solution 2 below.
     
  2. Install your TurboTax download/CD.

Solution 2

Forcefully uninstall and reinstall TurboTax.

Note: If the error persists after following the Solution 2 instructions, you'll need to delete the TY08 or TY09 folder by right-clicking it and choosing Delete. The path to the folder is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\TurboTax\TY08   (or TY09) 

Then, follow the Solution 2 steps again.
