Administrator Rights (Windows)

Computer rights (privileges) determine the tasks a user can perform. Windows operating systems define two types of users: standard users and administrators. Standard users have limited rights, while administrators have full rights. Some tasks (e.g., installing TurboTax and downloading your state) require administrator rights.

Note: To determine whether you already have administrator rights, right-click the Start button in the Windows taskbar. If Open All Users and Explore All Users appear on the menu, you have administrator rights.

If you do not have administrator rights, log on as an administrator so you can perform the tasks that require them. Follow these steps:

  1. Select Start, and then select Log Off.
  2. To confirm, select Log Off.
  3. Log on as a computer administrator (or as a user with administrator rights).

Note: If you cannot log on as administrator, ask a user who has administrator rights on the computer for assistance. For additional information, refer to your Windows Help.

On Windows Vista, the TurboTax program also requires administrator rights to perform certain tasks. For information about running the TurboTax program as an administrator, click here.
