Error: TurboTax engine has encountered a problem...

When you start TurboTax 2004, the following error message appears:

TurboTax engine has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

Follow these steps to resolve this error:

  1. Uninstall TurboTax.
    Note: Click Yes when prompted to remove WexTech AnswerWorks components.
  2. Search your computer for the following term (including quotation marks):

    "[version] 2004"
    where [version] is Basic, Deluxe, or Premier

  3. In the search results window, right-click each item, and then click Delete. Click Yes (or OK) to confirm each deletion.
  4. Reinstall TurboTax, but do not start TurboTax.
  5. Right-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop, then click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.
  6. Select the Run in compatibility mode check box, select your operating system, and then click OK.
    Note: Windows XP users can select Windows 2000.
  7. Start TurboTax.

Note

  • If TurboTax 2004 is installed in multiple locations (drives) on your computer, uninstall, and then reinstall TurboTax 2004 in all locations.
  • If the error persists, defragment your computer using Disk Defragmenter system tool on the Accessories menu, and then reinstall TurboTax to a new location.
