Transfer '07 Command in the TurboTax File Menu is Dimmed

The Transfer '07 command in the TurboTax File menu is only available in Forms Mode.

Right after you start a return in Interview Mode, the program asks if you would like to transfer last year's tax data. Transferring last year's tax return information removes any data that's already been entered, which is why the program prompts you to transfer before you've started entering data into your return.

Once you skip past this screen, the Transfer '07 is command is dimmed or "grayed out" in the File menu to help prevent accidentally wiping out data you've entered.

If you've already started your 2008 return and decide later that you want to transfer last year's information over, you'll need to start a new return or go into Forms Mode to use the Transfer '07 option. Either way, you'll lose the information you have already entered.

  • To start a new return, simply go to the File menu and select New Tax Return.
  • To transfer using the Transfer '07 option:
  1. Go to the Forms menu and select Go to Forms.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Transfer '07.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to transfer relevant information from your 2007 return into your 2008 return.

Remember, transferring from last year into an existing return removes any existing information you've already entered.
