Move Your Tax Return to a New Computer

Follow these steps:

  1. On the old computer, make a backup of your tax return file. Back it up to a CD or portable device.
  2. On the new computer, retrieve your tax return.
  3. Make sure TurboTax is installed, then choose Open Tax Return from the TurboTax File menu to open the file.

It's best not to double-click the tax file to open it, especially if TurboTax isn't installed, as this can cause data file corruption.

Tip: An even easier way to move a tax file is to e-mail it to an alternate e-mail account, retrieve your e-mail at the new computer, and then save the tax return file. (Don't e-mail it to the same account or it'll immediately show up in your Inbox again!) If you don't have an alternate e-mail, you can easily set one up through MSN, Yahoo, Google, or any one of a number of online e-mail providers.
