Move Your Tax Return to a New Computer

You can move your tax return (tax file) from one computer to another. Select the appropriate link for steps:

Tip: You can e-mail your tax file to yourself. Say your return is on computer A, and you want to move it to computer B. On computer A, send yourself an e-mail with your tax file attached. On computer B, open your e-mail, and then save the attached tax file on your hard drive.
 

Move your tax return (Windows)

You must install TurboTax on your computer before you can open your tax file. Always use TurboTax to open your tax file. Do not double-click your tax file to open it.

Follow these steps:

  1. On the computer you're moving from, back up your tax file on a CD (or portable device).
  2. On the computer you're moving to, copy your tax file from the CD (or portable device) to your computer's hard drive. Retrieve Your Tax Return (Windows).
