Continue an Online Return in TurboTax Desktop

Note: TurboTax Online is closed for Tax Year 2008. We are now preparing TurboTax Online for Tax Year 2009. Click here to read more.

If you began your return using TurboTax Online, but would like to switch to TurboTax desktop, you can easily save your online return and open it in a desktop version of TurboTax.

To open your TurboTax Online 2008 return in TurboTax desktop 2008:

  1. Log in to the TurboTax Online account that contains your 2008 tax return.
  2. Go to Other Options on the left side of your screen and select Download My Tax File.
  3. Select the Download My Tax Data button, and then save your return to your computer's hard drive. We recommend saving it to your My Documents folder or another folder that you can easily remember. The file is saved with a .tax2008 extension.
  4. Sign out of TurboTax Online.
  5. Install the desktop version of TurboTax 2008.

Important: If your Online return includes tax returns for one or more states, you must install each state(s) as well. Otherwise, you'll receive Error 539 when you attempt to open your return in the Desktop version.

  6. Open TurboTax. From the Welcome screen, select Browse to find file. Or, from the File menu, select Open Tax Return.
  7. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the .tax2008 file in step 3.
  8. Select the .tax2008 file, and then select Open.
  9. From the File menu, choose Save.
Note: You can download your tax data file from TurboTax Online as many times as you want.
