Import from QuickBooks into TurboTax Business

You can import information from QuickBooks into TurboTax Business, which saves time and reduces the chance for errors.

Note: TurboTax Business only imports from full QuickBooks version. TurboTax Business will not import from QuickBooks Simple Start Free Edition, financial institutions, or Quicken.

Before you import from QuickBooks

  • If you need to set up your tax line assignments before importing, please visit the QuickBooks Support Site here.
  • Be sure to update TurboTax before you begin to ensure you have the latest forms and features installed.
  • If you want to transfer information from last year's return, you must do this before you import from QuickBooks. See Transferring in TurboTax.
  • To import from QuickBooks into TurboTax Business 2008, you must have the 2007, 2008, or 2009 version of QuickBooks.
  • Be sure the QuickBooks software is installed on the same computer where TurboTax is installed.
  • QuickBooks must be registered before you can import into TurboTax. To register, go to the QuickBooks File menu and select Register.
  • Open the QuickBooks software and the company file (.qbw extension) that you want to import from.
  • QuickBooks must be in single-user mode.
    • To switch to single-user mode, go to the QuickBooks File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  • Enter all your financial information into QuickBooks before importing your file.

Import as you go through the Interview

There are two ways to import your tax information from QuickBooks: (1) from the Interview; or (2) from the File menu.

We recommend importing from the Interview to maintain more control of what information is imported.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Start tab in TurboTax, and then select QuickBooks Information.
  2. Select the Import button, on the next screen select Yes, and then select Continue on the following screen.
  3. Select the QuickBooks file you want to import from and then select Continue.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish importing.
  5. Repeat these steps for any additional QuickBooks file you want to import.

Import from the File menu

Take the following steps:

  1. From the TurboTax File menu, select Import.
  2. Select the QuickBooks file you want to import from and click Continue.
  3. Confirm or change the Tax Year and the Accounting Method, as needed, then click Continue. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the import.
  4. Repeat these steps for any additional QuickBooks file you want to import.
