With TurboTax, you can import tax information from a number of financial sources. Here we describe how to import into the online version of TurboTax.
What you can import into TurboTax Online
You can import the following items into TurboTax Online:
- Quicken 2007, 2008, and 2009
- Form 1099 from participating banks, brokerages, and mutual fund companies
- Form W-2 from employers or participating payroll providers
- ItsDeductible
Before you import from Quicken
Follow these steps before you import from Quicken into TurboTax Online:
- If you want to transfer information from last year's return, do this before you import from Quicken. (See Transferring in TurboTax.)
- Enter financial information into Quicken before importing your file.
- Assign the tax-related items in Quicken to the appropriate tax forms and lines in your return. Refer to the Quicken Help for instructions on how to do this.
Import from Quicken
To import Quicken information into TurboTax Online, you must access TurboTax Online through the Quicken program. Be sure to update Quicken before you start the import. You can import from Quicken 2007, 2008, and 2009.
- Sign out of TurboTax Online.
- Close all open browser windows (including Quicken).
- Start the version of Quicken that you want to import from, and then open the Quicken file you want to import.
- Go to the Online menu, select Online Services, and then select File taxes online with TurboTax for the Web.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to sign in to TurboTax Online and import your Quicken information.
Before you import from financial institutions
Follow these steps before you import Forms 1099 or W-2 from your financial institution, mortgage lender, or payroll provider into TurboTax: See also About Importing From Financial Institutions (W-2, 1099, etc.).
- Your financial institution or payroll provider must be one of our participating institutions.
- You must have an online account with your financial institution or payroll provider, and know your login information as well.
- If importing W-2 information, you must know your employer's identification number (EIN), which is printed in box B of your W-2.
Import from financial institutions
The Instant Data Entry feature allows you to import tax information directly from payroll providers and other financial institutions. TurboTax prompts you to import each piece of your financial information at the appropriate time in the Interview.
To go directly to an import section in the Interview:
- In TurboTax Online, select Tools in the upper portion of the screen, then select Topics & Forms.
- Type Import in the I'm looking for field.
- Select the import option you want, and then click Go.
