Review, Change, or Delete Transferred or Imported Data

After you've transferred or imported your tax information, it's important to verify that this information is accurate.

Note: Transferring and importing are different procedures.
  • Transferring brings relevant information from a prior year's tax return into your 2008 TurboTax return. (See Transferring in TurboTax.)
  • Importing brings information into TurboTax from financial software, such as Quicken or QuickBooks, or from financial institutions, such as your brokerage firm or payroll provider. (See Importing into TurboTax.)

Review or change transferred or imported data (desktop)

Follow these steps to review or change transferred or imported information in your desktop return.

Access all imported or transferred information

  1. Open your return and transfer or import your information as needed.
  2. Go to the Tools menu and select My Tax Data.
  3. On the My Tax Data dialog box, look in the Source column to see what information was transferred or imported.
    • Transfer: the information was transferred from last year's return.
    • Import: the information was imported from financial software, such as Quicken or QuickBooks, or from a financial institution, such as your payroll provider.
    • Blank: you manually entered the information into your 2008 return.
  4.  Select the item you want to view or edit, and then select Interview or Go to Form (depending on whether you want to access the item on the Interview screen or on the form).

View or update as you go through the Interview

You'll see transferred or imported information as you go through the Interview screens to prepare your return. If an entry needs updating, select the field you want to update and type over the information.

Note: If you try to edit a field that has been calculated by TurboTax, you may receive an error message preventing you from typing in that field. If this happens, right-click the field and select Data Source. TurboTax shows you where the number originated from so you can edit the information from the original source rather than the calculated field. (See Calculation Overrides for more information.)

View or update in forms mode

  1. From the TurboTax Forms menu, select Show My Return. A list of the forms included in your return will display.
  2. Double-click the desired form to open it.
Note: When in Forms mode, transferred information appears in teal.

Keep TurboTax and your financial software synchronized

If you edit imported information in TurboTax but not in your financial program, the information in your financial program will not match your tax return. We recommend that you synchronize your tax return and financial information:

  1. Correct the information in your financial program.
  2. Remove your imported information. (See Delete imported info below.)
  3. Re-import the corrected information from your financial program. (See Importing into TurboTax.)

  2. Select the item you want to remove.
  3. You can remove just that imported item or use the Remove All option to delete all imported information.
  4. When TurboTax asks you to confirm, select Yes.
Note: If you accidentally removed information that you don't want to, you can reverse the action by exiting TurboTax without saving your return.

Delete transferred or imported data (online)

Follow these steps to clear your online return. This is an ideal way to remove all transferred or imported information.

Delete all transferred or imported data (clear your return)

If you want to delete all data in your online return, including all transferred or imported information:

  1. Click the Home icon tab near the upper left corner of your screen.
  2. On the right side, click Other Options and select Clear Return.

If you haven't paid yet, another option is to simply start a new return. You'll need to create a new User ID and Password. This opens a blank return that doesn't contain the information that you transferred, imported, or entered on the previous return.
