Unable to Transfer Prior Year's Return, File is Unavailable (Mac)

If you are a Mac user and are trying to transfer a prior year's return but can't because the file is dimmed, try renaming the prior year's tax return file with a .tax extension. Here's how:

  1. Exit the current year's version of TurboTax.
  2. Browse your computer's folders to find the prior year's tax return file. (See Find Your Return on Your Computer.) Select the file while holding down the Ctrl key, and then select Get Info.
  3. From the Get Info menu, select Name and Extension.
  4. Change the name to include a .tax extension at the end of the file name.
  5. Restart the current year's TurboTax and transfer your prior year's tax return.

If you're still having the same issue, try this:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 above.
  2. Rename the tax file using only simple, alphanumeric characters like abcd.tax or 1234.tax
  3. Save the renamed file to your computer hard drive then copy it to a portable device (e.g. USB flash drive).
  4. Restart the current year's TurboTax and transfer your prior year's tax return from the portable device.
