This error will occur if TurboTax does not recognize the QuickBooks company file on your computer. To resolve, follow the steps below. Attempt to import your QuickBooks data into TurboTax after each step.

  1. Try importing from the TurboTax File menu.
    1. From the TurboTax File menu, select Import, and then From Accounting Software.
    2. From the list, select QuickBooks.
    3. Click Continue.
    4. Make sure your QuickBooks company file is open.
    5. Click the Import Now button.
    6. Select the information you want import, and then click Import Now.
  2. Make sure your QuickBooks company file is not on a network. If it is, download it to your local drive.
  3. Verify your Tax Line items are correctly assigned in QuickBooks and that you have a file open that contains transactions for the 2008 tax year.
  4. Rebuild your QuickBooks company file. The Rebuild Data utility is designed to fix damage in a QuickBooks data file.

Important: Never rebuild or update a company data file that is located on a remote drive (for example, by accessing it over your network). If the file is on a remote drive, copy the file locally before attempting to run this utility.

  1. From the QuickBooks Window menu, choose Close All.
  2. From the File menu, choose Utilities, and then click Rebuild Data.
  3. Rebuilding requires that you back up your company file. Click OK to the message informing you that a backup must be made.
  4. Do not use existing backup disks. If you do so, you may replace your one good backup with a bad one. Click No if you see a message asking if you want to replace the backup file. To avoid overwriting your current file, enter a unique name in the Filename field.
  5. At the bottom of the Back Up Company File window, click OK.
  6. The Rebuild Data utility will begin as soon as the backup is complete. Click OK to the message informing you that the Rebuild has completed.
  7. Open your company data file and attempt to import it into TurboTax.
