Error or Timeout When Importing or Creating Many Financial Transactions

When attempting to import or create a large number of financial transactions, such as stock sales, TurboTax stops responding and/or returns an error message.

Possible Cause and Solution

TurboTax has limits to the number of financial transactions that you can import or create. Scroll down to the section that applies to your situation for suggestions on how to work around this limitation.

Importing from Quicken

Transaction limitations generally don't affect Quicken imports because TurboTax counts each account in Quicken as one import item even if that account contains hundreds of transactions. However, if you have a very large Quicken file, TurboTax may stop responding during the import process.

If you have this problem using TurboTax Online, you can try switching to TurboTax desktop, which lets you import larger Quicken files. (To purchase our TurboTax desktop products, visit our TurboTax Desktop page.)

If  you have this problem using TurboTax desktop, try creating a .txf file with a smaller date range, and then import the .txf file into TurboTax. (See Create a Quicken .txf File to Import into TurboTax Desktop.)

TurboTax Online

If you're trying to import into TurboTax Online, you may see a message similar to this one:

We notice you have more than 500 financial transactions to import. TurboTax Online wasn't designed to handle this many transactions.

A similar message may appear if you manually create hundreds of transactions.

If you have this problem using TurboTax Online, you can try switching to TurboTax desktop. (To purchase our TurboTax desktop products, visit our TurboTax Desktop page.)

TurboTax Desktop

A maximum of 3,000 financial transactions can be safely imported or created in TurboTax desktop without affecting program stability. Going beyond this limit may cause instability issues such as calculation errors.
