Before you start, please read these tips:
- When you amend (change or correct) a return, you’re sending a revised return to the government. You only need to do this if you’ve already filed.
- You can amend a return if you received another form, need to change a number, or correct a mistake.
- If you made changes to your return after you filed it, we strongly recommend you undo those changes before you amend your return.
TurboTax forms and calculations are specific to each tax year. For example, to amend your 2008 tax return, you need to use TurboTax 2008. Click here if you need to amend your 2008 tax return.
If you used TurboTax Online, you’ll need to log in and get a PDF copy of your tax return (the return you filed with the IRS and your state). Before you amend your return, you'll use the PDF as a guide to enter your tax return data into the downloaded version of TurboTax.
If you have trouble logging into TurboTax Online, see Forgot Your TurboTax Online User ID, Password, or Security Answer.

What is the Status of Your Tax Return?
The steps to amend a 2007 or 2006 tax return depend on the status of your information in TurboTax. One of the following scenarios should apply:
- Original Tax Return (Recommended, Most Common Scenario): If you have not made corrections in TurboTax since filing your return, you'll use your original tax information to amend your return. Your original amounts will flow to Form 1040X, and to complete the form, you'll enter the corrected amounts. For help, see How to amend a prior year tax return using original tax information.
- Revised Tax Return: If you have made corrections in TurboTax since filing your return, you'll use your revised tax information to amend your return. Your corrected amounts will flow to Form 1040X, and to complete the form, you'll enter the amounts from your original return. For help, see How to amend a prior year tax return using revised tax information.
- State Tax Return Only: If you need to amend just your state return, see Amend Your Prior Year State Tax Return.
To find out if this scenario applies to you, compare the copy of your original return with your updated return in TurboTax. If the taxable income and total tax amounts differ on the two returns, you'll need to amend your 2006 or 2007 tax return.
