How do I transfer my tax return from Mac to Windows?

Here's how to transfer from your TurboTax for Mac 2007 return to TurboTax for Windows 2008:

  1. From your Macintosh computer, rename last year's TurboTax file to add a .tax extension. For example, if last year's TurboTax for Mac return was named John Smith 06, rename it John Smith 06.tax.
  2. Copy last year's TurboTax for Mac return (now named with the .tax extension) to a Windows-formatted storage device, such as a floppy disk, CD, or other removable storage media.
  3. Insert the storage device into the appropriate drive of your Windows-based computer.
  4. If desired, you can copy the Mac file (now with a .tax extension) from the storage device to your Windows hard drive. We recommend copying it to your My Documents folder or another folder you can easily remember.
  5. Open this year's version of TurboTax for Windows.
  6. To start a new return, select Start Return from the Welcome screen, or go to the File menu and select New Tax Return. (If you've already begun entering your return, any existing information is removed when you transfer.)
  7. If your tax return file is listed on the Transfer Tax Return Information screen, select the file. If the file isn't, select Browse to Find File, navigate to your tax return file, select the .tax file, and then select Open.
  8. Select Transfer Return, and then select OK to confirm the transfer.
  9. The relevant information is transferred from your 2006 return to your TurboTax 2007 return. You can review transferred information and add, edit, or delete items as necessary. (See Review, Edit, or Delete Transferred or Imported Information.)
