Did You Receive a Notice from the IRS?

If the IRS notifies you about an error on your return, don't panic. Often the questions are easy to answer or misunderstandings easy to clear up.

You may be able to correct simple errors (e.g., incorrect Social Security number on your 2006 return) by simply calling the IRS or providing additional documentation.

Note: If you phone the IRS, be sure to get the IRS agent's name, employee number, and date so you have a record of the call.

More serious errors (e.g., underreported income on your 2005 return) may require amending your return.

Important: If you receive a CP 2000 notice, follow the instructions in the notice.

To amend a return prepared with TurboTax, refer to Amend Your Tax Return for instructions. If a tax professional prepared your return, consult your tax professional.

If you amend your federal return, be sure to check your state return, too.
