What is Form CSA-1099-R?

Form CSA-1099-R is issued to federal civil service retirees to show the amount of annuity paid during the year.

Additional information may be needed for some distributions reported on Form CSA-1099-R. If you're using the simplified method, enter the information requested on lines 2, 3, 6, 9 and 11 of the third page of the Form CSA-1099-R in TurboTax. Your original contribution is your plan cost at the annuity starting date. TurboTax will determine how much of your distribution this year is taxable and how much is a return of your contributions.

If the distribution reported on Form CSA-1099-R is a lump-sum distribution, the distribution is not eligible for special treatment on Form 4972.

How do I Enter Form CSA-1099-R?

For TurboTax Basic, Deluxe, or Premier:

  1. Select the Federal Taxes tab, then select Income.
  2. In the Choose How to Enter Your Income, select the Select Specific Topics button.
  3. Select Retirement Distributions.
  4. Next to IRA and Pension Distributions, select the Start or Revisit buttons.
  5. In the Choose a Type of Form 1099-R, select the check box for CSA-1099-R then select Continue.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your CSA-1099-R information.

For TurboTax Home & Business:

  1. Select the Personal tab, then select Personal Income.
  2. In the Your Personal Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
  3. In the Your Personal Income screen, select Retirement Distributions.
  4. Next to Retirement Distributions (IRA and Pensions) , select the Start or Revisit buttons.
  5. In the Choose a Type of Form 1099-R, select the check box for CSA-1099-R then select Continue.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your CSA-1099-R information.
