What is Form 1099-SA?

Form 1099-SA reports a distribution from a tax-advantaged savings account.

You'll get this form if you received distributions from your Health Savings Account (HSA) or your Medicare Advantage Medical Savings Account (MSA). You'll get this form if your HSA/MSA administrator made payments directly to your medical care provider.

A Health Savings Account, is a tax-exempt trust or custodial account, established by you and your employer, to pay for your qualified medical expenses.

A Medicare Advantage MSA is not a Medicare + Choice health plan. To have a Medicare Advantage MSA, you must pay funds into your established plan account to pay for qualified medical expenses. If you assigned your Medicare benefits to a HMO provider, that is a Medicare + Choice health plan, not a Medicare Advantage MSA.
