What is Form 1099-G?

You can receive income from the government in a variety of ways that is reported on from 1099-G, such as:

  • Unemployment compensation
  • State and Local Tax Refunds
  • Business Tax Refunds
  • Agriculture Program Payments
  • Taxable Grants
  • Alternative trade adjustment assistance (ATAA) payments

Government Payments

The 1099-G is issued if you received certain payments from Federal, state, or local governments. Enter the information in TurboTax exactly as it appears on your Form 1099-G.

Important: Some states use a non-standard Form 1099-G. The boxes on non-standard forms may not align with those on the standard form.

How do I Enter Form 1099-G?

For TurboTax Basic, Deluxe, or Premier:

  1. Select the Federal Taxes tab, then select Income.
  2. In the Your Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
  3. In the Your Income screen, select Other Common Income.
  4. Select Start or Revisit button for State and Local Tax Refunds on 1099-G.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

For TurboTax Home & Business:

  1. Select the Personal tab, then select Personal Income.
  2. In the Your Personal Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
  3. In the Your Personal Income screen, select Other Common Income.
  4. Select the Start or Revisit button for State and Local Tax Refunds.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
