How do I transfer my tax return from Windows to Mac?

With TurboTax, you can easily transfer a tax return prepared with TurboTax 2007 for Windows to TurboTax 2008 for Mac.

  1. From your Windows computer, copy last year's TurboTax file to a media that your Macintosh computer can read (e.g. CD-R, USB flash drive, DVD-R, etc).
  2. On your Macintosh computer, copy your tax file to your computer desktop so that it is easy to find during the transfer process. Later you can move the file to another folder of your preference.
  3. Open TurboTax on your Macintosh computer.
  4. Start a new tax return then select Transfer 2007.
  5. A message will appear, Transferring from last year's return will replace all existing data in the current return. Click OK, to continue.
  6. Next a Transfer window appears, browse to where you saved your 2007 tax file. Select Choose once you've found the file. You will see a window briefly showing the file transferring.
  7. Now you can go back to the interview by clicking EasyStep, and selecting Resume EasyStep.
  8. TurboTax will have you verify your transferred data and you can continue preparing your 2008 return.

 

To transfer a 2007 TurboTax Windows file to Macintosh computer with TurboTax 2008:

  1. From your Windows computer, copy your TurboTax file to a media that your Macintosh computer can read (e.g. CD-R, USB flash drive, DVD-R, etc).
  2. On your Macintosh computer, save your copied tax file to your desktop so that it is easy to find during the transfer process. Later you can move the file to another folder of your preference.
  3. Open TurboTax on your Macintosh computer.
  4. Select the File menu, then click Open Tax Return.
  5. You'll be prompted to save your current work, choose either Save or Don't Save.
  6. Next a Open window appears, you'll need to navigate to where you saved your tax file.
  7. Click Choose, TurboTax will appear and ask you to continue where you left off in your current file or to start a new return. You can now continue preparing your 2007 tax return on your Mac.
