Start Over in TurboTax Online

In TurboTax Online, you can delete your state return or you can clear information from your federal and state returns if you need to start over.

To delete a specific form from your return, see Remove Forms from Your Return.

Important: Once you've paid for your TurboTax Online returns, you cannot add/remove your state return or clear information from your return.

 

Delete your state return

You can delete your state return if you need to start over on your state return or if you decide to prepare your return for a different state.

Important: Once you've paid for your TurboTax Online returns, you cannot add/remove your state return.
Important: In TurboTax Online, you can prepare up to three state returns for each federal return you file. See Multiple State Tax Returns for more information.


To delete your state return, follow these steps:

  1. Select the State Taxes tab at the top of the screen.
  2. On the State Taxes screen, select Continue.
  3. On the Your State Return screen, select Delete next to the state to delete, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. On the Your State Return screen, select Add Another State Return to start over or to select a different state.

Clear your return and start over

You can start over on your federal and state returns by clearing your return.

Important: Once you've paid for your TurboTax Online returns, you cannot clear information from your return.
When you clear your return
  • All of the information you've entered is deleted
  • All of the information you've imported or transferred is deleted
  • All forms are removed from your return
  • All federal and state tax information is deleted
Note
  • You can prepare multiple federal returns with TurboTax Online, provided you sign in with a unique user ID/password for each return. For more information, see Multiple TurboTax Online Returns Require Unique User ID's and Passwords.
  • If you sign in with an existing user ID/password and start a new return, you'll overwrite any information previously associated with that user ID/password.

To clear your return, follow these steps:

  1. If you're not on the Wecome page, click the tto-home-icon tab at the top of your TurboTax Online screen.
  2. Select Quick Links, then Other Options, and then Clear Return.

  3. Select Yes, Clear My Return.
  4. On the Your Information Has Been Cleared screen, select Continue to start a new return.
