Active Duty Military Meets AGI Requirement, But Can't Qualify for FFA

Some taxpayers who are active duty military and meet the $54,000 AGI requirement may find that TurboTax does not allow them to file for free.

This issue has to do with the EIN (Employer Identification Number) you have entered on your W-2. If the EIN you entered does not match one of the standard military EIN's, TurboTax will disqualify you.

Solution

To solve this issue, return to the W-2 Form and correct the EIN you entered at the top. Here's how:

  1. Start TurboTax.
  2. Click Search Topics or Forms at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Search Topics or Forms dialog box, enter "W-2."
  4. From the list that displays, select "w-2, wage and tax statement" then click the GO button.
  5. On the "W-2 Tax Summary" page, click on the Edit button next to the Employer's Name.
  6. Review and correct the data you entered in the field for Employer's Federal ID No.
  7. Click the Continue button.

If you still receive the error that you do not qualify, you need to contact the issuer of the W-2 for a corrected form.
