Before you start, please read these tips:

  • When you amend (change or correct) a return, you’re sending a revised return to the government. You only need to do this if you’ve already filed.
  • You can amend a return if you received another form, need to change a number, or correct a mistake.
  • We strongly recommend you do not amend until you’ve received your refund or paid the taxes you owe.
  • If you e-filed and your return is pending, don’t amend until it has been accepted. Click here to check the status of your e-filed return.
  • If you made changes to your return after you filed it, you must undo those changes before you amend your return.
Important: If you want to amend a return other than your 2008 return, you must use the version of TurboTax from that year. See amending a prior year return.

Which returns do you want to amend?

  • Federal and state (recommended – if you amend your federal return, the state also wants to know why you amended)
  • Federal return only
  • State return only (do this to correct a mistake on your state return, or if your federal income wasn't treated correctly on your state return, or if you forgot to take a state-specific credit or deduction)
Important: If you started amending your return and discover that you don't need to amend, click here for instructions to delete Form 1040X. Click here for instructions to delete the state amendment form.
