Enter the Wrong Direct Deposit Information?

If you have already transmitted your return with the wrong bank information, first wait until your return is accepted or rejected by the taxing agency.

If your return is rejected, correct the account information and any other errors (including the errors that caused the rejection) and transmit your return again.

If your return is accepted and already processed, the IRS will mail you a check if the routing number or bank number is not valid. However, if these numbers are valid, the IRS may direct deposit your refund into the incorrect account -- the IRS does not match names to account numbers. Call the IRS at (800) 829-1954 as soon as possible to prevent this from happening. (If the problem is with your state return, contact your state taxing agency.)

If you have not transmitted the return, select the Print & File tab, and then the E-file category. Continue through the Interview until you come to the Enter Direct Deposit Information screen. Make any necessary changes.
