Do I Need To Mail Any Documents To The IRS After E-filing?

If you e-file your income tax return, in most cases, you do not have to mail any documents.

However, it depends on the method that you used to sign your tax return when you e-filed:

  • If you chose to sign your tax return electronically i.e. provide your electronic signature to the IRS, you do NOT need to send any other forms to the IRS.
  • If you chose to sign your tax return using the paper method, you must sign Form 8453-OL and then mail the completed Form 8453-OL to the IRS.

The goal of e-filing is to be a paperless way for taxpayers to file their income tax returns.

In general, only a few of the less common forms in an income tax return such as:

  • Form 1098-C - Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes
  • Form 8332 - Release of Claim to Exemption for Child of Divorced or Separated Parents

are required to be sent via U.S. Postal Mail to the IRS when e-filing.

Common tax forms such as your employer's Form W-2 or Form 1099s that you received are not required to be mailed to the IRS after you e-file your tax return.
