How to Resolve E-file Rejections Due to Invalid or Duplicate Social Security Numbers

There are several e-filing rejection codes associated with incorrect or duplicate Social Security Numbers (SSNs).
These rejection codes are sent from the IRS, not the TurboTax software. TurboTax checks for errors before transmitting your return and the IRS determines whether your return is accepted or rejected.

How social security number rejection codes can occur
The IRS verifies that the SSNs reported on your return are accurate and are not reported on another's return. Here's how SSN rejections can occur:
- Another person entered your or your dependents' SSNs on their return. This can happen if someone mistypes their social security number and types yours by mistake or when both parents claim a child as a dependent on separate returns. If one parent files a return before you file yours, the IRS likely accepts the first return and rejects the second. (Common rejection codes for this reason are: 0507, 0510.)
- You entered your or your dependents' SSNs incorrectly, such as transposing numbers when entering the SSN. (Common rejection codes for this reason are: 500, 501,503, 510.)
How to resolve social security number rejection codes
- Open your tax return in the TurboTax program. Go to the File menu and select Open Tax Return.
- Verify that the SSNs you typed match the Social Security Cards for you and your dependents.
- Select the Personal Info tab, and then select About You to verify your SSN and select Dependents to verify your dependent SSNs.
- Check for misspellings or transpositions in the last names and SSNs. Be sure that the middle initial and suffix are entered in the correct fields.
- Correct any errors and re-file your return. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
-
- Call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify that the SSNs match the names on record for you and your dependents (particularly if you recently changed your name).
- If the SSA has incorrect information then submit a request to have your information changed. This process generally takes 4 to 6 weeks. If you can't wait this time to re-file electronically, then you need to print and mail your return.
-
- Call the IRS and verify that your and your dependents' SSNs have not been used on another return. If your SSN has been used on another return, then you need to work with the IRS to determine how best to resolve the duplicate usage of your SSN. In the mean time, print and mail your return.
If the above steps do not resolve this issue then you need to print and mail your return.
