Resolve an E-filing Rejection
E-file rejections are common and you shouldn't worry if your e-filed tax return is rejected.
In many cases, an electronic filing error can be quickly and easily resolved in the TurboTax program. After you fix the error(s), you will then be able to successfully re-transmit your tax return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center. Keep in mind that you will not be charged an e-filing fee whenever your tax return is rejected.
Here's what you'll see when you return to the TurboTax program to check status:

If you're using TurboTax Desktop, you'll want to make sure that you have the latest software updates for the TurboTax program installed on your computer.
- To update the TurboTax software (Windows), select the Online menu in the TurboTax program, then select One-click Updates.
- To update the TurboTax software (Mac), select the TurboTax menu in the TurboTax program, then select Check for Updates.
If you're using TurboTax Online, i.e. preparing your tax return over the internet, the software is updated automatically and continuously.
When you return to the TurboTax program to check e-file status, select the Fix button in the Your E-file Status Interview screen to learn why your e-filed tax return was rejected.
It's very important to follow the on-screen instructions in the TurboTax program to correct the error(s). The TurboTax Interview screens will take you step-by-step to each error in your return that you need to correct.
Many e-file rejection errors are caused by something as simple as an incorrect social security number in your return which is one of the most common causes of tax return errors.
If you have a less common error, you can search our knowlegebase on TurboTax.com for more specific information about the error and instructions about how to resolve it. See the table below for a list of common e-file rejection errors.
When you've fixed all of the errors in your tax return, follow the on-screen instructions to e-file your tax return again. Remember, you will not be charged an e-filing fee for a rejected tax return or charged twice for e-filing the same return.
If you checked your e-file status over the Internet or the telephone, you must check the e-file status again from within the TurboTax Interview. The TurboTax program needs to gather and store the return's e-file status information before you can re-transmit your tax return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center.
Select the e-filing error that you are experiencing. If you do not see your error listed, go to Other E-file Rejection errors for information about additional e-filing errors.
