Resolve an E-filing Rejection
E-file rejections are common -- so don't worry if your e-filed tax return is rejected. In many cases, an electronic filing error can be quickly and easily resolved so you can re-transmit your return.

Step 1 - Get the latest TurboTax software updates
If you're using TurboTax Desktop, you'll want to make sure that you have the latest software updates for the TurboTax program installed on your computer.
- To update the TurboTax software (Windows), select the Online menu in the TurboTax program, then select One-click Updates.
- To update the TurboTax software (Mac), select the TurboTax menu in the TurboTax program, then select Check for Updates.
If you're using TurboTax Online, i.e. preparing your tax return over the Internet, the software is updated automatically and continuously.
Step 2 - Fix the error using the TurboTax Interview screens
Here's what you'll see when you return to the TurboTax program to check status:

Select the Fix button(s) to learn why your e-filed tax return was rejected. Many e-file rejection errors are caused by something as simple as an incorrect social security number in your return.
Even if not all of your returns were rejected (for example, your federal was rejected but your state was accepted), you'll still need to go through the Fix steps for all of your returns. Then, you'll see the Done button and can try e-filing again.
Step 3 - Retransmit your income tax return
When you've fixed all of the errors in your tax return, follow the on-screen instructions to e-file your tax return again.
If you checked your e-file status over the Internet or the telephone, you must check the e-file status again from within the TurboTax Interview. TurboTax needs to gather and store the return's e-file status information before you can re-transmit your tax return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center.
What if my federal tax return was ACCEPTED, but my state return was REJECTED?
If the Your E-file Status screen shows that your federal return was accepted and your state return was rejected, here's what to do:
Select the Continue button next to your federal tax return, then follow the onscreen instructions to correct and resubmit your state tax return.

Some TurboTax State customers may get "caught in a loop" -- that is, see the same two screens over and over -- if they select Revisit here. If this happens to you, simply click Continue instead to get back on track.
What if my federal tax return was REJECTED and the tax filing deadline has already passed?
You can re-transmit your corrected tax return for 5 days after the deadline without any penalty. If you cannot e-file your federal return successfully before this deadline, you'll need to print and mail your income tax return.
If you have to mail your return, make sure that you attach the Intuit Electronic Postmark - Certification of Electronic Filing report that printed with your tax return as proof that you filed your return in a timely manner. This document contains your taxpayer information and the date and time that your tax return was submitted for e-filing.
