This error message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0525: On Form 8839, the eligible child's social security number and last name does not match the IRS's records. The IRS receives this information from the Social Security Administration.

How to resolve this error
TurboTax Desktop

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct the adopted child's social security number and name in Form 8839. Here's how:

  1. Open your tax return in TurboTax Desktop.
  2. Go to the Forms menu, then select Show My Return.
  3. Select Form 8839: Qualified Adoption Expenses, and then select Open.
  4. Scroll down to Part I - Information About Your Eligible Child or Children, and verify that the child's Social Security number (SSN) and name match his or her social security card. Check for misspellings or transpositions in the last names and SSNs. Be sure that the middle initial and suffix are entered in the correct fields.
  5. If necessary, correct Form 8839, save your return, and then re-file. TurboTax does not charge to re-file the same return electronically.
  6. If the above information is correct, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify that the SSN matches the name on record (particularly if the child changed his or her name as part of the adoption).
  7. If the SSA has incorrect information, then submit a request to have the information changed. This process generally takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Important: If you have confirmed that you've entered the correct name, social security number, and date of birth in your tax return, but you are still receiving this error, then you'll need to print and mail your return.
