Error 0019: "The routing transit number (RTN) is invalid ..." When Checking E-filing Status

These messages occur when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here are the complete messages:

  • Error Code 0019: The routing transit number (RTN) is invalid. The RTN must meet these conditions to be valid: must be 9 numeric digits long; and, the first two positions must be 01 through 12 OR 21 through 32.

  • Error Code 0019: The depositor account number (DAN) is invalid. The DAN must meet these conditions to be valid: must be alphanumeric (i.e., numbers, letters, and hyphens only); cannot be greater than 17 characters in length; and must not equal all zeros.

  • Error Code 0019: When the DAN has an entry, or if the RTN has an entry, either the checking account box must be checked or the savings account box must be checked.
How to resolve this error
TurboTax Desktop

You need to manually update your direct deposit information in the Federal Information Worksheet. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop.
  2. From the Forms menu, select Open a Form.
  3. Select the Federal Information Worksheet, and then select Open.
  4. Scroll down to Part IV - Direct Deposit or Direct Debit Information on the Federal Information Worksheet. This error commonly happens if the direct deposit information is not completed correctly.
  5. Verify the information in this section of the form:
    • Make sure either the Checking or Savings box is checked.
    • Verify the Routing number to be sure it isn't blank and is the correct number. (See Find your routing and account numbers  below.)
    • Verify the Account number to be sure it isn't blank and is the correct number.
    • The best place to get this information is from a voided check or by calling the financial institution.
  6. Update the information as needed, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
TurboTax Online

You need to verify and if necessary, update your direct deposit information. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Print & File tab, and then select E-File.
  3. Select the E-File My Return button, and then follow the on-screen instructions selecting the Direct Deposit option to have your refund deposited into your bank account.
  4. When the Enter Your Bank Information screen appears, verify the bank information you entered:
    • Make sure either the Checking or Savings option is selected.
    • Verify the Routing number to be sure it isn't blank and is the correct number. (See Find your routing and account numbers below.)
    • Verify the Account number to be sure it isn't blank and is the correct number.
    • The best place to get this information is from a voided check or by calling the financial institution.
  5. Update the information as needed, and continue the process to re-file your return. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
