Error 0510: "The taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse has been claimed..."
This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here is the complete message:
This taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse has been claimed as a dependent on someone else's return (according to returns the IRS has already received). Make sure that no other person can claim this taxpayer or spouse as a dependent (for example, the parents or grandparents), and that the dependent's Social Security number has not been used on another return as the primary or secondary taxpayer's SSN (the persons listed first and second on the return).
You'll need to verify, and if necessary, correct the social security number for the primary and secondary taxpayers and dependents:
- Open your return in TurboTax desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
- Select the Personal Info tab, and then select About You.
- Click Continue to navigate to the taxpayer and spouse personal information screen.
- Verify that the taxpayer and spouse's social security numbers and names match their Social Security cards.
- If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
- Select the Personal Info tab, and then select Dependents.
- Select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
- Verify the social security number:
- Verify that the dependent's Social Security number (SSN) and name match his or her Social Security card.
- If this information is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each of your other dependents.
- If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
- If this information is correct for the primary and secondary taxpayers and all your dependents, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use the SSNs on another tax return.
- If the problem still persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file.
- Call the IRS and verify that your SSNs have not been used on another return. If a SSN has been used on another return, then work with the IRS to resolve the duplicate usage. In the mean time, print and mail your return.
Note: A duplicate social security number can occur if another person enters your SSN on their return. This can happen if someone mistypes a social security number and accidentally enters yours or when both parents claim a child as a dependent on separate tax returns. The IRS likely accepts the first return and rejects the second.
