Error 0507: "The dependent's social security number ..." When Checking E-filing Status
This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:
Error Code 0507: The dependent's social security number cannot be used more than once in a tax return or on another return.
How to resolve this error
The IRS issues this rejection when a dependent you've claimed on your return has already been claimed. You can remove the dependent from your return then e-file again, or you can file your return by mail with the dependent. You may need to contact the IRS to find out more about claiming the dependent exemption.
You should verify, and if necessary, correct the social security number for each of your dependents:
- Open your return in TurboTax Desktop, or Sign in to TurboTax Online.
- Select the Personal Info tab, and then select You and Your Family.
- In the About Your Dependents section, select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
- Verify the social security number.
- Verify that the dependent's Social Security number (SSN) exactly matches the one on his or her social security card.
- If it is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each of your other dependents.
- If it is incorrect, update it, save your tax return, and then re-transmit your return. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
- If the social security numbers appear to be correct for all your dependents, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use this SSN on another tax return.
- If the problem still persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file for each of your children.
- Contact the IRS and verify that your dependents' SSNs have not been used on another return. If a SSN has been used on another return, then work with the IRS to resolve the duplicate usage. In the meantime, print and mail your return.
