E-file your federal business income tax return

E-filing (electronic filing) is a fast, secure alternative to mailing your federal business tax return. In general, e-filed returns are processed faster than mailed returns, which means you'll get your tax refund sooner.

Also, e-filing is more secure than the traditional mailing method because TurboTax uses industry-standard encryption technology to electronically transmit your return. See Confidentiality of E-filed Tax Returns for details.

  • TurboTax Business supports e-filing for Forms 1065, 1120S, and 1120.
  • E-filing is not supported for Forms 1120A, 1120H, and 1041. If you file one of these forms, you will need to print and mail your return.

There are six basic steps necessary to e-file a tax return:

  • Check the return for errors
  • E-file your return
  • Prepare your electronic signature form
  • Verify the transmission of your return
  • Check the status of your e-filed return
  • Print a copy of your return for your records

Step 1 - Check the tax return for errors

Select the Review tab, then select Error Check. TurboTax Business analyzes the return for any errors that may prevent you from e-filing the return. Make sure that you follow the on-screen instructions to fix the errors. Re-check the tax return for errors again.

Step 2 - E-file your return

Select the Print & File tab, then select File a Return, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: There is a charge for e-filing your business return. See E-filing In TurboTax for details.

Step 3 - Prepare your electronic signature form

IRS requires a  Form 8453: Declaration for an IRS e-file Return to be filed with your federal business return to verify your signature. The easiest way to complete this requirement is to convert the signed form into an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file that can be attached and sent electronically with your tax return.

TurboTax Business Interview walks you through the necessary steps to:

  • Print your signature form
  • Sign the paper copy
  • Convert the signed paper copy to a PDF file (either by scanning the paper copy and saving as a PDF file, or taking the paper copy to a local office supply store and having it converted)
  • Attach the PDF file to your business return

If you use this method, you do not need to mail any forms to the IRS, including Form 8453. If it is not possible to convert the signature form to PDF, you have the option of sending it via mail.

Step 4 - Verify your tax return was transmitted to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center.

Tax returns that have been successfully transmitted will show a status of ACCEPTED, PENDING, or REJECTED. If your business tax return did not transmit successfully, see Resolve E-filing Transmission Issues to troubleshoot the problem. You should receive an e-mail from the Intuit Electronic Filing Center if your return was transmitted successfully.

Do not confuse a successful Transmission with a successful Acceptance of your return. After successfully transmitting your return, you must check the status again to determine if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or your state taxing authority.

Step 5 - Check the status of your e-filed return

Select the Print & File tab, then select Check E-file Status, and follow the on-screen instructions.

  • If your tax return is ACCEPTED, follow the on-screen instructions to print a copy for your records (see below).
  • If your tax return is REJECTED, follow the on-screen instructions to fix the error, check the return for errors again, then re-transmit the tax return.

Step 6 - Print a copy of your return for your records

When your business income tax return is accepted, you should print a copy for your records. Select the Print & File tab, then select Save for Your Records, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Print and mail your federal business return

TurboTax Business allows you to print all or part of your return at any time.

When you're ready to print and mail your return: select the Print & File tab, then select File a Return, and then follow the on-screen instructions to File by Mail. The mailing address for your return will print on your return.

Checklist for printing and mailing a tax return:

  • Mail every form that prints.
  • Leave the forms in the order in which they were printed.
  • Carefully follow the filing instructions that print with your return. They tell you what other forms, such as your Form W-2, you need to attach to your returns.
  • Make sure you sign your return before mailing. The IRS treats an unsigned form as if it was never filed.
  • Use the Print for Your Records sub-tab to print a copy to keep.
  • To mail your return, see the Mailing Instructions included with your printed return.
