Resolve E-filing Transmission Issues
An e-file transmission error occurs when you attempt to e-file your tax return using TurboTax -- but the software does not successfully transmit your tax return data to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center.
In most cases, the TurboTax program displays an error message if the program determines that your tax return cannot be transmitted.
Before you try to e-file your return again, make sure that you check your return for errors -- then follow the on-screen instructions that guide you through correcting each of the errors.
When you finish error-checking your return, you should see a "Congratulations!" Interview screen that confirms the TurboTax program did not find any errors in your tax return.
Tips for troubleshooting e-filing transmission errors
Here are a few suggestions to try:
- Verify the e-filing status of your return
- Update the TurboTax desktop program
- Check your computer hardware
- Check your web browser
- Turn off unnecessary programs and processes running on your computer
- Search the TurboTax Support KnowledgeBase

Verify the e-filing status of your return
If your income tax return was successfully transmitted by the TurboTax program, you should see one of three e-file status messages: ACCEPTED, PENDING, or REJECTED. If you don't see one of these status messages in the TurboTax program, your tax return may not have been transmitted properly.

Update the TurboTax Desktop program
We update the TurboTax program throughout the tax season to incorporate the latest revisions from tax authorities. Updates also correct problems found in TurboTax.
To update TurboTax Desktop:
- Save your tax return and then close the TurboTax program and all other software programs that are running on your computer.
- Shut down and then restart your computer.
- Open the TurboTax Desktop program and then go to the Online menu and select One-click Updates to download the latest software updates.
- When the updates are installed, re-transmit your tax return.
- You will not be charged twice for e-filing the same return.
- Make sure that you wait 24-48 hours (federal returns) or 5 days (state returns) before checking the e-file status.

Check your computer hardware
You could have a connection problem within your computer system. Check the Internet connection to your computer and check your home router connections if applicable.
Check your web browser
The TurboTax Online program always has the most recent program updates, however, there could be an issue with your web browser when you e-filed your tax return.
- In Windows, download and install the latest updates for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later from the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ie.
- Check your existing Internet Explorer browser settings. You may have to reset your browser settings.
Turn off unnecessary programs and processes running on your computer
If you are using Microsoft Windows, you can try shutting down any programs that you're not using such as a word processing program or spreadsheet.
In addition, you can try ending any Windows processes running on your computer that are not needed. To open Windows Task Manager in Windows XP, press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on your computer's keyboard. In the Windows Task Manager dialog box, select the Processes tab.
