Can I E-file with a Foreign Address?

No. You cannot e-file your tax return if you are using a non-military foreign or overseas address. In other words, you can't e-file your tax return using a taxpayer address located in a country other than the United States.

Military addresses such as APO or FPO addresses are considered domestic addresses and are therefore eligible for e-filing.

You can e-file your tax return using an address from one of the U.S. Territories such as Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. You must make sure that your taxpayer address conforms to the standard convention used for filing a tax return i.e. "Address," "City," State," and "ZIP code."

Note: If you are using a non-military foreign or overseas address, you must print and mail your return.

Domestic Address but Foreign Employer/Payer

If your address is domestic but your employer's or payer's address is overseas, you can e-file.

Follow these rules to enter foreign address information for an employer or payer on Form W-2 or Form 1099:

  • Enter the number and street in the Street field. If there is no number and street, enter NONE.
  • Enter the foreign city, province or state postal code, and country in the City field. Do not abbreviate the country.
  • Leave the State and ZIP Code fields blank.
