This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0397: If direct debit is chosen, the requested payment date in the direct debit section must be entered and must not be later than April 17. If the return is transmitted after April 17, the requested payment date in the direct debit section must be entered and must not be later or earlier than the current date.

How to resolve this error

If you have TurboTax Desktop, you need to reinstall TurboTax to resolve this. Here's how:

Uninstall TurboTax Desktop.
Reinstall TurboTax Desktop.
Open your return in TurboTax Desktop. Then, from the Online menu, select One-click Updates. (See Update TurboTax Desktop.)
E-file your return again. TurboTax does not charge you again to re-file the same return again electronically. (See No Additional Charge to Resubmit a Rejected E-filed Return.)

If you have TurboTax Online or if you don't want to do the steps above, then you need to print and mail your return.
