Error 0535: "Schedule EIC, Line 2 of ... " When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. The complete message reads as follows:

Reject code 0535: Schedule EIC - Qualifying SSN, Line 2 of Schedule EIC and the corresponding Year of Birth, Line 3 must match data received from the Social Security Administration.

How to resolve this error

Verify, and if necessary, correct the social security number and date of birth for each of your dependents. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select Dependents.
  3. In the Dependents Summary screen, select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
  4. Verify the social security number and the date of birth.
    • If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file your return electronically.
    • If this information is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each of your other dependents.
  5. If this information is correct for all your dependents, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file for each of your children.
  6. If the SSA has incorrect information, then submit a request to have the information changed. This process generally takes 4 to 6 weeks. If you can't wait this time to re-file electronically, then you need to print and mail your return.
