Error 0563: "Dependent's SSN with Eligibility for Child Tax Credit ..." When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Form 1040/1040A - Dependent's SSN with Eligibility for Child Tax Credit on Line 6c has been checked was previously used for child tax credit.

How to resolve this error

The dependent's Social Security Number you submitted on Line 6c of Form 1040 or 1040A was previously used for a child tax credit.

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct the social security number for each of your dependents. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select Dependents.
  3. Select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
  4. Verify the social security number.

    • Verify that the dependent's Social Security number (SSN) matches his or her Social Security card.
    • If it is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each of your other dependents.
    • If it is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. There is no additional charge to resubmit a rejected e-filed return.
  5. If the social security numbers appear to be correct for all your dependents, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use this SSN on another tax return.
  6. If the problem persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file for each of your children.
  7. If the problem persists, contact the IRS to resolve the error. In the mean time, print and mail your return.
