How to resolve this error

You need to verify the employer's or payer's state abbreviation and ZIP code on your W-2s, 1099-Rs, 1099-Gs and W2-Gs. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Federal Taxes tab, and then select Income.
  3. Check the state abbreviation and ZIP code for each of your W-2s:
    • Select Edit for the 1. Wages and Salary option.
    • Select the first W-2 in the list, and then select Edit.
    • Verify that the State and ZIP fields match the W-2 from your employer. Correct them if needed.
    • Select the Back button and repeat this for each W-2.
    • Select Done to return to the Your Income screen.
  4. Check the state abbreviation and ZIP code for each of your 1099-Rs:
    • From the Your Income screen, select Edit for the 5. IRA and Pension Distributions option.
    • Select the first 1099-R in the list, and then select Edit.
    • Verify that the State and ZIP fields match the 1099-R from the payer. Correct them if needed.
    • Select the Back button and repeat this for each 1099-R.
    • Select Done to return to the Your Income screen.
  5. Check the state abbreviation and ZIP code for each of your 1099-Gs:
    • From the Your Income screen, select Edit for the 6. State and Local Tax Refunds option.
    • Select the first 1099-G in the list, and then select Edit.
    • Verify that the State and ZIP fields match the 1099-G from the payer. Correct them if needed.
    • Select the Back button and repeat this for each 1099-G.
    • Select Done to return to the Your Income screen.
  6. Check the state abbreviation and ZIP code for each of your W-2Gs:
    • From the Your Income screen, select Edit for the 11. Other Income option.
    • Select Edit for the 8. Gambling Winnings option.
    • Select the first W-2G in the list, and then select Edit.
    • Verify that the State and ZIP fields match the W-2G from the payer. Correct them if needed.
    • Select the Back button and repeat this for each W-2G.
    • Select Done to return to the Other Income screen.
  7. If the State or ZIP were entered incorrectly, update the information, save your return, and then re-file. TurboTax does not charge you again to re-file the same return electronically.
  8. If the State or ZIP were entered correctly, this return is not eligible to be filed electronically for the current tax year. You must print and mail your return.
