Error 0511: "The primary taxpayer's social security number ..." When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0511: The primary taxpayer's social security number with a filing status of single, married filing joint or qualified widower was used on another return with a filing status of married filing separate.

How to resolve this error

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct the social security number for the primary taxpayer. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select About You.
  3. Click Continue to display the taxpayer and spouse personal information.
  4. Verify that the taxpayer's social security number matches his or her Social Security card.
  5. If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file.
  6. If the social security number is correct, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use this SSN on another tax return.
  7. If the problem still persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file.
  8. Call the IRS and verify that your SSN was not used on another return. If your SSN was used on another return, then work with the IRS to resolve the duplicate usage. In the mean time, print and mail your return.

Note: A duplicate social security number can occur if another person enters your SSN on their return. This can happen if someone mistypes a social security number and accidentally enters yours. The IRS likely accepts the first return and rejects the second.
