Error 0668 or 0669: "Self-Select PIN Program ..." When Checking E-filing Status

These messages occur when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here are the complete messages:

  • Error Code 0668: Self-Select PIN Program - The Primary Taxpayer is ineligible to participate in the Self-Select PIN program since the Primary Taxpayer is a duplicate on the IRS File.

  • Error Code 0669: Self-Select PIN Program - The Secondary Taxpayer is ineligible to participate in the Self-Select PIN program since the Secondary Taxpayer is a duplicate on the IRS File.
How to resolve this error

You need to sign your return on paper when you e-file rather than using an electronic signature. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Print & File tab, and then select E-File.
  3. Select the E-File My Return button, and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Choose a Signing Method for E-filing screen appears, select the Sign On Paper button.

    Note: When you choose the Sign On Paper option when e-filing your return, you'll need to mail your signature to the IRS using Form 8453-OL.
  4. Once your return is accepted, follow the on-screen instructions to print your e-filing paperwork. This includes filing instructions as well as Form 8453-OL. See Working with Form 8453-OL.
