Error 0509: "The secondary taxpayer's social security number ..." When Checking E-filing Status

These messages occur when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here are the complete messages:

  • Error Code 0509: The secondary taxpayer's social security number was used as a dependent's social security number or used as qualifying child's social security number on Schedule EIC on the current return or a previous return.

  • Error Code 0509: The dependent's social security number was used as a secondary taxpayer's social security number on the current return or a previous return.

  • Error Code 0509: The qualifying child's social security number on Schedule EIC was used as a secondary taxpayer's social security number on the current return or a previous return.
How to resolve this error

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct the social security numbers for the secondary taxpayer and dependents.

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Check the secondary taxpayer's social security number:
    • Select the Personal Info tab, and then select About You.
    • Click Continue to display the Taxpayer and Spouse personal information.
    • Verify that the Spouse's social security number matches his or her Social Security card.
    • If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
  3. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select Dependents.
  4. Select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
  5. Verify the dependent's social security number.
    • Verify that the dependent's Social Security number (SSN) matches his or her Social Security card.
    • If it is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each of your other dependents.
    • If it is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
  6. If the social security numbers are correct, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use this SSN on another tax return.
  7. If the problem still persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file.
  8. Call the IRS and verify that the SSNs have not been used on another return. If a SSN has been used on another return, then work with the IRS to resolve the duplicate usage. In the mean time, print and mail your return.

Note: A duplicate social security number can occur if another person enters your spouse's or dependent's SSN on their return. This can happen if someone mistypes a social security number and accidentally enters yours or when both parents claim a child as a dependent on separate tax returns. The IRS likely accepts the first return and rejects the second.
