Error 0526: "On Form 2441/Schedule 2 ..." When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0526: On Form 2441/Schedule 2, the qualifying person's social security number cannot be used more than once in the return or on another return.

How to resolve this error

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct your dependent's social security number and name. Here's how:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select Dependents.
  3. Select the first dependent in the list, and then select Edit.
  4. Verify the social security number.

    • Verify that the dependent's Social Security number (SSN) and name match his or her Social Security card.
    • If this information is correct, select the Back button and repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each of your other dependents.
    • If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
  5. If this information is correct for your dependents, but you're still having trouble filing, check to see if you used the same SSN for more than one individual and verify that you did not use the SSNs on another tax return.
  6. If the problem still persists, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify the information that they have on file for your dependents.
  7. Call the IRS and verify that your SSNs have not been used on another return. If a SSN has been used on another return, then work with the IRS to resolve the duplicate usage. In the mean time, print and mail your return.

Note: A duplicate social security number can occur if another person enters your SSN on their return. This can happen if someone mistypes a social security number and accidentally enters yours or when both parents claim a child as a dependent on separate tax returns. The IRS likely accepts the first return and rejects the second.
