Error 0500: "The primary taxpayer's Social Security number and last name ..." When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0500: Primary Social Security Number and Primary Name Control of the Tax Form must match data from the IRS Master File.

OR

Error Code 0500: The primary taxpayer's Social Security number and last name does not match the IRS's records. The IRS receives this information from the Social Security Administration.

How to resolve this error

You need to verify, and if necessary, correct the primary taxpayer's Social Security number and name.

  1. Open your return in TurboTax desktop or log in to TurboTax Online.
  2. Select the Personal Info tab, and then select About You.
  3. Click Continue to display the Enter Your Personal Information screen.
  4. Verify the taxpayer's Social Security number and name.
    • Verify that the Social Security number (SSN) and name match the taxpayer's Social Security card.
    • Check for misspellings or transpositions in the last name and SSN. Be sure that the middle initial and suffix are entered in the correct fields.
  5. If this information is incorrect, update it, save your return, and then re-file. You will not be charged again to re-file the same return electronically.
  6. If this information is correct, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at (800) 772-1213 and verify that the SSN matches the names on record (particularly if you recently changed your name).
  7. If the SSA has incorrect information, then submit a request to have the information changed. This process generally takes 4 to 6 weeks. If you can't wait to re-file electronically, then you need to print and mail your return .

Please Note: If you get this error after the October 15th filing deadline and need to change your Social Security number to fix the error, you will not be able to e-file the return again.  It would now be considered a 'new' filing because the SSN is different. At this point you would need to print your return and mail it.

You can include a letter of explanation to the IRS that indicates you did attempt to e-file before the filing deadline and were rejected. You may want to print out any e-mails or e-file status information from TurboTax with your postmark data to attach to that letter. It will still be the IRS's discretion as to whether they consider your return to be filed in a timely fashion.
