Firewalls and TurboTax

Your firewall software controls network traffic to and from your computer. It allows or denies communications based on a default security policy. Your firewall may prompt you each time a connection is attempted, and based on your response ("allow" or  "deny"), adapt the security policy. Or it might require you to modify the security policy by adding the names of software and sites you trust to your "trusted zone."

TurboTax includes features that access our servers (e.g., One-click Updates and Download State). If your firewall prevents TurboTax from accessing the Internet, you can't update or download.

We offer the guidelines and links below to help you address firewall issues.

Note: If you're using Windows 2000/XP/Vista and you've uninstalled McAfee software, you need to ensure that all of the software has been removed. A McAfee file may still be present that prevents TurboTax from updating. For steps, see How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe) [Document ID 107083].

Guidelines

Note: If you use DSL and a routeradjusting your router's MTU setting may resolve connectivity issues.

Follow these guidelines:

  • Be sure you have the latest version of your firewall software, and the most recent updates for your version. Your firewall software may be able to check for updates automatically, or you can check for updates yourself.
  • If your firewall prompts you, allow TurboTax. (You might see the TurboTax application names ttax.exe or updatemgr.exe.)

  • View your firewall's Help for information about adding programs (such as TurboTax) to your computer's trusted zone.
Tip: You may find more information on your firewall's Web site by visiting the technical support, user forum, or community page. Search for turbotax, access, configure, connection, or other words that describe what you're looking for. See the links below that we've found.

  • If the other steps don't work, you might temporarily turn off your firewall so your TurboTax program can connect to our server for software updates and product downloads.
Important: While your firewall is off, we recommend closing any other program that connects to the Internet (e.g., e-mail). After TurboTax completes updating or downloading, be sure to turn on your firewall.
