Why Am I Charged for a Free Product?

If you're using TurboTax Freedom Edition (www.irs.gov) or TurboTax Free Edition (www.turbotax.com), you'll be prompted for payment if you:

  • Upgraded to a fuller-featured version of TurboTax.
  • Filed a state return. (States other than AL, AR, AZ, GA, ID, IA, KY, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, NY, ND, NC, OK, OR, RI, SC, VT, WV are chargeable in TurboTax Freedom Edition. All states are chargeable in TurboTax Free Edition, where there is no income limitation.)
  • Selected a service, such as Audit Defense or Pro Review.
  • Chose to pay any TurboTax fee using Refund Transfer. (Refund Transfer allows you to deduct any fee from your refund. Refund Transfer is an OPTIONAL $29.95 service provided by Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. If you don’t select this service, you can pay by credit card, where there is no service charge.)

Additionally, TurboTax Freedom Edition requires you to meet qualifying criteria to prepare and e-file your federal tax return for free. If you don’t meet these criteria, you'll be prompted to upgrade to one of the fee-based TurboTax products.
