What is the Child Tax Credit?

The Child Tax Credit puts up to $1,000 in your pocket for each child who qualifies as a dependent. The child must be age 16 or younger as of December 31, 2012, and have lived with you for more than half the year. They also must be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien, and cannot provide more than half of their own support.
