If your spouse passed away during the tax year, then you are considered married for the entire year for filing status purposes as long as you did not remarry during the year. If you did remarry before the end of the year, then you could file married filing jointly with your new spouse. When filing for your deceased spouse you would put their filing status as married filing separate.
