Does zero in box 2a on Form 1099-R mean my IRA is not taxable?

Be careful! A blank box 2a (taxable distribution) on Form 1099-R for your retirement or IRA payment doesn’t mean it’s not taxable, only that the payer didn’t know. It’s up to you to determine from your records the correct taxable amount to include in your return. Do not enter zero unless you are sure none of the distribution is taxable. If the original Form 1099-R has 0 in box 2a that’s okay and means the distribution is not taxable.
