You may be able to deduct travel expenses paid in connection with volunteer work. Expenses such as transportation, meals and lodging are deductible if there is not a significant element of personal pleasure, recreation or vacation in the travel. Car expenses can be deducted using actual cost or the standard mileage rate as established by the IRS.
