Improvements made for medical reasons may be deductible. For homeowners the deduction is the excess of the cost of the improvement over the increase in value of the house. Improvements made by renters are fully deductible. Medical deductions are itemized deductions and are deductible to the extent that they exceed 10% of adjusted gross income.
