If you are married and file a joint return, mortgage interest can be deducted on a qualified home owned either jointly or by only one spouse. If you are married and file separate returns and you and your spouse own more than one home, you can each deduct interest from only one home. However, if you both consent in writing then one spouse can deduct both the main home and a second home.
